Our story
How it all started
It all started with us, me and my sister. My name is Oleksandr, and hers is Sofia. Today we are the founders of the program, but we moved to Slovenia together with our family.
We moved to Slovenia 12 years ago, to a small town called Mozirje in the Lower Savinja Valley, with a population of around 5,000 people. Most of you have probably never even heard of this place. I was 11 at the time, and Sofia was 8. Like most people who move to a new country, we faced stress, adaptation challenges, the fear of not being accepted in a new environment, and of course, the language barrier.
At school, we were welcomed very warmly. Teachers and classmates supported us, helped us, and guided us during the first months. We didn’t experience any bullying or discrimination. But opposite, we felt openness and kindness. At the same time, we had to learn the language from the beginning, with the help of teachers, classmates, and additional Slovenian lessons at school. Back then, there was almost no English-speaking community in Mozirje, unlike today in Ljubljana or other larger cities, so we had no choice. We had to communicate, make new friends, learn the language, and integrate into society as quickly as possible.

Why we do what we do
After going through the process of integration and language learning ourselves, we realized that we could help others go through it faster, more easily, and with greater confidence.
At the beginning, it was simply individual lessons and helping friends who had just moved to Slovenia. We shared our experience, explained the language in a simple and understandable way, and helped people in real-life situations. At that stage, it felt more like a small hobby than a professional tutoring.
Over time, people started to recognize us, recommend us to their friends, and a waiting list gradually began to form. At the same time, we were still students, so our time was limited due to studies and sports.

I highly recommend the Slovenščina Korak za Korakomc platform for learning Slovenian, and especially the teacher Ajda.
